At the extreme north of the Belluno province in the high Piave valley is the
German-speaking island of Sappada (1250 m), crowned by the Terze, Ferro
and Siera groups of mountains. The Piave river has its source here in the Val
Sesis at the foot of Monte Peralba that separates Sappada from Austria.Colonised towards 1000 AD by Tyrolean groups, Sappada has preserved the memories of its origins through the dialect spoken, in the structure of the old wooden buildings, in the folklore, gastronomy and traditions. Amongst these is the Carnival whose protagonist is the austere Rollat, dressed in a thick bear- fur coat. In the summer the area offers excursions at every level, all types of sports, entertainment, festivals, feasts and in winter, 21 km ok skiing slopes and 15 km of cross country routes.
This is also the place where Silvio Fauner and Pietro Piller Cottrer, the Olympic athletes choose to train. Amongst the places to visit that shouldn't be missed are the Ethnographic museum, the Museum-house of Country civilisations, the Acquatona ravine, the Calvary and the little waterfalls.
At Sappada, there is tourist accommodation available in hotels, farm holiday, farmhouse, residence self-catering accommodation, mountain chalets, b&b, rooms for rent, holiday homes, camp sites and tourist villages.
